Sat 28 Feb, 2009 - Tekapo to Christchurch
It was a little sad leaving behind the calm and serene surroundings of Lake Tekapo. Not just because it means that I’ll be heading home tomorrow but it was such a beautiful morning watching the sun rise - could have had another day of peace, though with no bus tomorrow that would be a little problematic.
The bus took us through the Mackenzie country which was predominantly farming land - seems to be much of the southern part of NZ. The driver commented on the patchwork looking paddocks being due to the irrigation systems running to the farms to help in times of drought, and the different colours basically suggesting where the crops are up to in their cycle.
Got to the base hostel at lunch time and I went to Victoria Park where a Latino Dance Festival was being held. So got to see some performance and workshops in action. The weather wasn’t aiding the ‘carnivale’ feel though was still a great, however small, crowd and atmosphere. Wandered around town then back to hostel as the heavens opened.
Spent most of the night discuss Australian travel destinations with an Israeli boy. Jen came to my room to say hi and also tell her story of why changed rooms. Some boys are quite revolting. So my last night in New Zealand. Reflecting back it has all been quite amazing. Hard to decide what was my favourite. Certainly enjoyed all the walks and outdoors activities.
Sun 1 March, 2009 - Christchurch to Sydney
Wandered around the streets for the morning. No shops were open till after I passed. Walked toward some smaller Galleries and not open till 12pm. The main Art Gallery was open and had Chevrolet’s on display outside. Different designs and colours from a range of years dating back to 50s. Ran into Jen whilst there. Only the top floor of the gallery was open as the exhibitions on the ground level were all being changed over. So wandered through what was on display. The White on White exhibition was interesting. Even created my own creature and had it photographed!
So we went to art and craft markets which was interesting though nothing overly different. Then it was time to head back and collect our bags, catch the shuttle and head to the airport. Not much to do at the airport for two hours though time went quick enough. Emirates Airlines is fabulous to fly with. Had personal screen with more films to choose from than time available.
Anyway back home for two weeks - happy to be back but ready to go again!!
