Help-Portrait (East Vancouver) Shoot Day

Help-Portrait is a new initiative that has captured the world in a relatively short time. It seeks to be an annual event on 12 December. The concept is relatively easy ... find someone, take their photo, get it printed and give it to them! It involves photographers donating their time and skills to take photos/portraits of people who would normally be unable to afford the opportunity.

There were three venues in Vancouver alone where photographers had jumped on board and organised an event. I will certainly be finding other locations around the world, depending on where I am, so that I can be involved again, even to assist with people coming in the door.

It was a fabulous atmosphere with people from the community coming to have their picture taken, many of whom had barely had their photo taken let alone professionally. It was lovely seeing happy smiling faces, or those that started a little apprehensive in front of the lens slowly warming up to their photographer and letting their faces shine.

The East Vancouver location I was at had also organised for girls to come to provide hair and make-up for those who wanted it prior to the photo shoot. Made the ladies, plus some men, feel special for the day and make a difference in their lives. Everyone and everything there was donated by amazing people and companies, it was also covered by major TV stations which should help to make the event more widely known in the future.

How the photos are taken and presented is obviously up to each venue and photographer. East Vancouver’s was a black and white portrait shot with a framed 8x10 and smaller 4x6. From the faces at the door to the final image selected there were some amazing looks, and stories behind the eyes.
